Guidance getting started…

I’m new and learning what all it takes to plan for home automation. Currently I have a few connected devices, mostly via WiFi. I’d like to expand and switch to something hub based to reduce WiFi connections, bring things together into one app and make automations quicker and more advanced. I use an iPhone so HomeKit support would be nice, but I’m ok using a different app if needed. I’m considering doing an rPi or PC build of HA or HB. I’m also learning about Hoobs as an option. I’m a little confused on whether some hub choice is enough, or do I need a hub like rPi or HomePod plus something like Hoobs or other device to make things work?
